Gemini has announced that it is adding passkeys as an option for two-factor authentication (2FA) on its platform. Passkeys offer increased security and ease of use compared to other authentication methods, making them a popular choice among industry leaders like Microsoft, Apple, and Google.
Gemini is committed to implementing the highest security standards to ensure the safety of its users. By adding support for passkeys, the platform aims to provide even greater account security. Passkeys, developed by the Fast Identity Online (FIDO) alliance, offer the highest security standards available and reduce the effort needed to keep an account secure.
Passkeys can now be used on both web and iOS mobile devices for 2FA on Gemini. They provide an extra layer of protection, making it harder for unauthorized users to gain access. Additionally, passkeys offer a seamless authentication experience, eliminating the need to enter codes received via SMS or authenticator apps.
Unlike other 2FA methods, passkeys are resistant to phishing attempts, significantly enhancing account security. They are stored securely on a device’s Secure Enclave, similar to a public and private key used for securing a crypto wallet. Once created, passkeys are securely stored on the device and iCloud Keychain.
To sign in to a Gemini account using a passkey, users will be prompted to verify their identity through biometric authentication, such as a fingerprint or face ID scan. The biometric data used for authentication is never shared with Gemini or any third party. It is stored locally on the user’s device.
In the future, Gemini plans to expand passkey support beyond 2FA, allowing for passwordless login. With this feature, users will no longer need to use a username and password to access their accounts. Instead, they can rely on passkeys for a seamless login experience.
Gemini’s addition of passkey support demonstrates its ongoing commitment to crypto innovation and prioritizing user security. With passkeys offering advanced security and ease of use, Gemini aims to provide a safer and more convenient experience for its users.
